McDonnell Douglas Print Work

This account was a radical departure from my others at J. Walter Thompson-Chicago, which were primarily consumer packaged goods. (Although Northern Trust Bank and Northern Telecom also added variety.) What an opportunity to spread my wings as a writer. Literally. How many copywriters can say they’ve worked on pretty much everything from missiles to mayonnaise?

McDonnell Douglas F-15 Campaign Booklet

This booklet was a bound compilation of produced print ads specifically created for the annual Army/Navy football game. I wrote all of the ads (Yes, I can go long.) and also researched all of the coaches’ quotes for the righthand page of each spread.

Random fun fact: The pilot pictured on the back of the booklet was actually our account guy, who was based in St. Louis and a member of the Missouri Air National Guard.

McDonnell Douglas sponsored a Smithsonian World TV series which I had the good fortune to write about. The topics varied and the series was highly informative, often providing little known historical facts or context. With each ad in this campaign we wanted to pique people’s interest in each episode and include a strong CTA.
